Local stations rise against networks
Culture, too

Big national channels dominate radio in France as they do in many countries, even in regional markets. There are many reasons, none the least of which legacy and well-healed owners. Local stations pop up, every now and then, as listeners find more choices.

And so it is in the January-March greater Paris (Ile de France) market survey, recently released (April 26) by research institute Médiamétrie. Certainly the big national channels continue to lead but the aggregated market share of local stations rose to 20%, up from 17.6% one year on. Several local stations saw their market share double, or more, in a year while national posted losses. (See Ile de France radio market share trend chart here)

Hip-hop and soul station Générations more than doubled its market share as did TSF Jazz. All-French songs station Chante France rose to 1.2% market share from 0.6% year on year, its best showing ever. Générations started as a hospital station in 1992. TSF Jazz has been on the air since 1999 and Chante France launched in 1994. The highest rated local station – Radio Latina – posted 2.2% market share, up slightly.

The new survey was also good to arts radio channels. Commercial classical music channel Radio Classique rose to 3.1% market share - and 8th place over all – from 2.1% one year on. Speech-based public channel France Culture posted its best ever results in the greater Paris market with 2.4%, up from 1.1%. Public channel France Musique was also up slightly.

For the rest, there wasn’t much good news. RTL, still number one, dropped to 12.2% market share from 14.4% year on year. Public news-talk channel France Inter moved into 2nd position with 10.1% from 9.4%, dislodging Europe 1, which dropped to 8.5% from 10.1%.  Also notably in the dumper were rap hip-hop channel Skyrock, down to 4.8% from 5.7%, and dance channel Fun Radio, down to 2.05 from 2.9%. Oldies channel Nostalgie bumped up to 2.7% market share from 2.3% one year on. (JMH)

Strike closes radio station…briefly
prevailing conditions

Athens radio station Flash 96 left the airwaves (April 23) and for a time it appeared owner Petros Kyriakidis was ready to close the station. An industrial action by technicians union ETEP members was met by locked doors. All 60 employees were told to go home. The station fell silent, victim, said the owner, of “prevailing conditions in the radio market.”

Negotiations between Mr. Kyriakidis and ETEP centered on management demands for 20% pay cuts. ETEP has conducted several strikes against radio stations over the last several months. Mr. Kyriakidis reportedly told the union “stop the strike or the station closes,” quoted by zoornalistas.gr (April 24). Shutting down the station, however, may have put its license in jeopardy.

The following morning (April 24) first music was heard and later an announcement on the flash-gr website that “following consultations, Flash will continue its presence in Greek radio,” reported e-tetradio.gr (April 24). “Management focus remains on informing listeners unfettered. To this end we will continue to make every effort.”

Shortly thereafter, technicians returned to the station.

In January about 30 self-styled anarchists briefly occupied the Flash studios in suburban Athens and several broadcast messages of support for the extremist group Revolutionary Struggle. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
