Big channels post losses as overall audience rises
Upward trend for public channels

Looking at daily reach figures in the recent AIMC General Media Study (EMG) there’s lots of good news for the full service general interest channels. Several increased gross daily reach. Reach share, however, is a different story.

The EMG reports reach figures determined by survey for all media three times a year. Radio reach is relatively low compared with other European countries, just 59.3% according to the April 2011-March 2012 survey. Ignore that. Of all media in Spain only radio and the Web have shown consistent reach growth over the last decade. The 2001 gross daily reach for radio in Spain was only 52.4%. (See more on media in Spain here)

This makes the radio reach share figures even more interesting because they tend to show where the new listeners are tuning in and where they’re not. Top ranked Cadena Ser seems not to have benefited from new listeners. Its reach share has dropped to 32.0% from 34.7% year on year. Five years ago (April 2008-May 2009 EGM) Cadena Ser’s daily reach share was 39.6%.

Big hit music channel Los 40 Principales, perennially the top ranked music channel, posted the heaviest year on year loss of all national channels, dropping to 21.1% reach share from 22.2%. Punto Radio disappeared from the EGM, managers deciding last November not to participate after reach share losses. (See national channel reach share chart here)

Onda Cero, owned by Grupo Antenna 3, has continued its rise, posting the biggest reach share gain of all national channels; 18.8% from 17.5% one year on. Sister channel pop-rock Europa FM had the biggest daily reach share increase of all music channels, to 8.3% from 7.5% one year on.

Main national public channel RNE also showed an upward trend. The general interest channel, fraught with budgetary challenges, posted its highest daily reach share in years, 11.8% from 10.6% year on year. Five years ago the channel had dropped to 7.8% reach share.

Cadena COPE, the general interest channel, continues to fade, though year on year its reach share remained 11.7%. and 6th ranking nationally. Five years ago the channel held 3rd place nationally with 17.2% reach share.

Catalan channels picked up significant reach share. Ràdio Associació de Catalunya 1 (Rac 1) posted its highest ever reach share in the national survey; 4.9% up from 4.4% year on year. Public channel Catalunya Radio also picked up reach share, 3.4% from 3.2%. (JMH)

Digital sports channel announced, promptly criticized
“sheer cynicism”

German public broadcaster WDR announced a special event radio channel for summer sports available on the DAB+ network 18 hours a day between mid-May until early July. The main focus will be the UEFA Euro 2012 championships but also included will be the European swimming and athletics championships plus tennis from Wimbledon. German commercial broadcasters are outraged.

“As with previous major events, we believe we are making a great offer for all sports fans,” said WRD radio director Wolfgang Schmitz in a statement (April 11). “We want to promote digital radio and do something innovative for the future of radio.”  The channel will be available throughout Germany as a test channel.

Not pleased is German commercial broadcasters association VPRT, which accused public broadcasters of circumventing rules limiting new channels by calling the sports channel a “test run.” (See more on digital radio here)

“It is sheer cynicism,” said VPRT radio VP Klaus Schunk in a statement (April 12). “We see this as a direct attack…on the commercial stations in Germany. The floodgates will be open for (public broadcasting) to use digitization as an aggressive competitive displacement of private radio stations.” (See VPRT statement here – in German)

Private sector broadcasters – not limited to Germany – have long argued that public broadcasters have taken unfair advantage of analogue to digital radio transition. (JMH)
