Receiver manufacturers waiting for “a craze”

Digital radio is a “fool’s game,” said the French association of audiovisual electronic manufacturers Simavelec after the much heralded “launch” of digital radio multiplexes in three French cities. The group, which represents Sony, Panasonic, LG, Phillips and others, was “an early supporter” of digital radio, noted association president Bernard Heger, quoted by nextinpact.com (July 1). No longer; digital radio “will be without us.”
“Today large broadcasters are strongly against this project,” explained M. Heger. In the three cities where multiplexes using both DAB+ and T-DMB digital radio platform standards are now operational only “stations of lesser notoriety” are broadcasting. “After these three cities… nothing is presently scheduled, no visibility, no calendar.” (See more about digital radio here)
The French government in 2008 approved – and touted – the T-DMB digital radio standard over DAB. And 2008 wasn’t a good year to ask broadcasters for serious investment in anything. NRJ Group, for one, opted for web streaming for digital expansion. A year ago regulator CSA allowed the DAB+ standard to be used so long as it is integrated with T-DMB. “Despite the creation of multi-standard chips we advocate a single standard… which would obviously be DAB+,” he added. “We do not see the interest of France to go it alone.” Current French rules require all radio receivers “digital-compatible” within 18 months of digital broadcasting reaching 20% of the French population.
“If there is a craze, a public demand, of course manufacturers will provide receivers.”
