Fans donate record amount to threatened radio broadcaster
"survival exercise"

Media watchers have long worried that elections and other fixtures of democratic life are threatened by the predilections of authoritarian rulers. In the civilized world there is no arguing that information flow - free and fact-based - is essential. Dictators know this, too.

Elections were held in Hungary a week ago and the right-wing, nationalist xenophobic Fidesz party of president Viktor Orban came out, again, on top. Many election watchers call it a “landslide” though it was only 53% of all voters. OSCE election watchers reported state capture of the country’s media as a contributing factor.

Less reported, also last week, record-breaking donations for Klubradio was reported by Hungarian media news portal Media1 HU (April 13). Klubradio is radio broadcaster kicked off the FM airwaves by the Fidesz controlled media regulator NMHH two years ago. It has since operated on the internet. Klubradio’s spring “survival exercise” took in HUF124 million, about €330,000, between March and mid-April, roughly coincident with the election campaigns. Last fall’s “survival exercise” brought in HUF110 million, about €290,000. (See more about media support here)

Proceeds from the fundraisers go through the independent Free Band Foundation (Szabad Sávért Alapitvany), which was set-up in 2019 to “help provide support for the maintenance and preservation of the high-quality professional, ethical and content values of radio broadcasting in the face of drastically changed media conditions.” Last summer the Hungarian government issued a decree preventing anonymous donations to non-governmental organizations. (See more about media in Hungary here)

Another challenged broadcaster is community listener supported station Tilos Radio, known for alternative content and a huge active archives. Last week the aforementioned media regulator decided not to renew its Budapest FM license for “severe breaches of regulations,” reported Telex HU (April 14). The license expires in September. Tilos Radio was the first community radio station in Hungary, first as a pirate in 1991 then licensed in 1995. According to the regulator, the “severe breaches” have something to do with filing annual reports, similar to the complaints against Klubradio.

Radio channel touched by election tricksters
"agonizing tone"

French media were rapped with the first round of presidential elections down to the last minutes. Through the seemingly interminable campaign, as usual, reporters reported, commentators commented, campaigners campaigned and comedians joked. Now they have two more weeks until the second round of voting.

As national public radio channel France Inter was getting to the final results phase in its coverage Sunday night (April 10) somebody, as yet unidentified, over-powered an FM frequency in the Paris Est district with a “pirate transmitter.” For nearly two and a half hours a 15 minute “loop” filled with a rant about “politicians, technocrats and journalists” was heard, reported France Inter (April 11). A listener reported the event, described as “a metallic voice, an agonizing tone and music, interspersed with sound excerpts reminiscent of reportage archives,” and the France Inter program resumed. At about the same time, a Lyon, France FM frequency was hijacked for “Radio Anti-France.” (See more about elections and media here) (See more about media in France here)

Once again there were sighs in France election night as Swiss and Belgian media outlets disregarded prohibitions on early release of election results. Belgian public broadcaster RTBF began sharing polling data early in the afternoon. Of course, campaigns tend to share polling data, veracity not established, with reporters through the last hours of voting. Swiss-French newspapers Le Temps and Tribune de Geneve contracted independent polling, details which they dutifully released.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
