Radio network moves away from unhinged social media
"until the wheels fall off"

Name-calling and labelling are just a power trip. Psychologists for decades have considered these insults in the realm of low emotional intelligence. “Your mother wears combat boots,” is particularly illustrative. Insecurity and difficulties with articulation contribute to these brain spurts. It’s best just to steer clear.

US radio network NPR - National Public Radio - has provided news, current affairs programs and entertainment to affiliate public radio stations since 1971. NPR has had its ups and downs. Its funding comes primarily from fees paid by the affiliate stations plus underwriting sponsorships - name and claim. Editorially, NPR serves its high-income and well-educated audience. The US National Press Club bestowed on NPR its 2022 annual Journalism Award for breaking news coverage of the January 6 2021 US Capital riots, the most recent of a long list of awards and honors. (See more about public broadcasting here)

Last week NPR was labelled a “US state-affiliated media” on Twitter, the struggling social media platform controlled by Elon Musk. The designation is used to - correctly - label Russian and Chinese propaganda platforms Russia Today (RT) and CGTN, respectively. Knowing that Twitter now has fewer employees able to make code changes and Chief Twit likes to jump into the inner working on a whim, the genesis was clear. “Seems accurate,” he added to his own feed.

Later he almost backtracked when faced with a flurry from horrified US media and tech watchers, except Fox News. Calmly, as usual, NPR chief executive John Lansing said he was “disturbed” by the labelling, quoted by Variety (April 5), “a description that, per Twitter’s own guidelines, does not apply to NPR. It is unacceptable for Twitter to label us this way. A vigorous, vibrant free press is essential to the health of our democracy.” In this short week, NPR stopped posting to Twitter. Always busy Chief Twit had time to replace the Twitter bird logo with the logo of Dogecoin, part of the cryptocurrency universe, symbol of all things loony. (See more about social media here)

“Musk’s disdain for traditional news media was a major animating factor in his decision to buy Twitter to begin with,” wrote Taylor Hatmaker on tech portal TechCrunch (April 5). “And as Twitter decays into an unpleasant slurry of stale jokes, amplified hate and paid prominence, Musk will likely continue to manipulate the social network to his own ends, right up until the wheels fall off or we all stop paying attention.”

Broadcaster moving with the audience closes transmitter
"time has come"

Analogue radio broadcasting is certainly on its last legs. AM/MW stations are closing just as fast as the accountants can sell the real estate. The future of long wave transmission is down to the wire. Don’t take it personally, they say; it’s all about Gen Z (Zoomers) on TikTok and, of course, the money.

Irish public broadcaster RTE is giving up the 252 long wave transmission for Radio 1 in mid-month. “The time has come to bring the long wave service to a close,” said RTE director general Dee Forbes in a statement, quoted by Irish News (April 3), citing energy costs. Radio 1 remains on the FM band, TV audio and online in Ireland. (See more about media in Ireland here)

The future of this long wave broadcast has been on the bubble for nearly a decade. A write-in campaign in 2014 by “elderly” Irish citizens living in the UK saved it then. Long wave is known for traveling long distances. Radio 1 252 listeners in the UK will need to adjust to radio player apps. (See more about digital transitions here)

The 252 long wave transmitter and tower system came into being in 1989 as a joint venture between RTE and RTL Group, then known as CLT. As such Atlantic 252 was not a pirate station, except in the UK, which at the time had no licensed commercial radio broadcasting. Atlantic 252 closed in 2002.

Once a real pirate, like on a ship, Radio Veronica was sold this week by Dutch company Talpa Networks to Mediahuis. It debuted in 1960 as a competitor for Dutch state channels. It initially operated on the upper end of the AM/MW band, switching to the lower end in 1972. The Dutch government outlawed pirate radio channels in 1974 after which the Radio Veronica name moved through several owners, including RTL Group.

Digital is great, says broadcast trade chief, but also send money
"sound universes"

A university-level conference gathered in Rome last week to “reflect” on the present and future of radio broadcasting as it evolves into the realm of audio consumption. It was sponsored by Italian broadcast trade body Confindustria Radio Televisioni (CRTV) in collaboration with Department of Communication and Social Research of the Sapienza University. There were presentations and formal discussions largely centering on the changing radio and audio audiences, reported media news portal PrimaOnline (March 30).

The keynote address was given by CRTV president Franco Siddi. "Continuous innovation, a professional and responsible offer, free accessibility are the essential characteristics of radio programming and its great added value,” he said welcoming the largely university-age audience. “These are characteristics that require stability of frequency and advertising resources and careful regulatory and normative maintenance. In fact, the system must remain sustainable, evolve and continue to respond to the needs of the public for information, music, entertainment, communication of and on the territory, on all platforms.” (See more about media in Italy here)

Then came the money pitch. “The watchword is now accompaniment, which in the transition from radio to DAB means guaranteeing continuity of resources for the return on investments in network infrastructures and keeping FM simulcast in FM until a suitable adoption of the new transmission technology; in the connected environment it means guaranteeing prominence, (meaning) visibility and accessibility of the radio on smart platforms.” He concluded with a direct appeal for “further initiatives to promote the medium in universities.”

Women’s Voice station again aggravates extremists - UPDATED
music and job opportunities

Radio has long been viewed as an inclusive medium. Even in this modern era with paywalls restricting access to nearly everything, radio remains generally open - for listeners and creators. This feature has allowed a plethora of services. Some are not pleased with this.

Sadai Banowan is a radio broadcaster located in the northeast of Afghanistan. It is operated by a small staff, mostly women. They have been giving listeners their best for about ten years. One can only imagine the challenges.

Last Thursday (March 30) just before midday local time, representatives of the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture and the infamous Vice and Virtue Directorate arrived at the station in Badakhshan province and ordered it closed. They had been broadcasting music during the holy month of Ramadan, violating “laws and regulations of the Islamic Emirate,” reported online news agency Khaama Press (March 31). (See more about media in Afghanistan here)

Taliban extremists who took over instruments of the state in August 2021 have imposed a variety of restrictions on women and girls. Working for media outlets, not officially denied to women, is nonetheless discouraged. Sadai Banowan - Women’s Voice in Dari, one of the main Afghan languages - was introduced in Fayzabad in 2014. Its on-air staff primarily work from their homes, avoiding confrontations with the Taliban.

Station owner/director Najla Shirzad denied that music had been played on the air, so informing the Ministry of Information and Culture local office, which had allowed the station to restart a few weeks after the Taliban edict on music and commenting on official policies. This shut-down was ordered, she said, because of recently broadcast programs “about girls’ education and job opportunities.”

UPDATE: The Ministry of Information and Culture in Badakhshan province, northeast Afghanistan, has allowed Sadai Banowan to return to the airwaves, reported AP (April 7). Ministry director Moezuddin Ahmadi said the station is now obeying the “laws and regulations of the Islamic Emirate,” meaning no music. Station director Najia Sorosh always denied the station had played the forbidden music but “gave a commitment to officials at the information and culture department, (and) they unlocked the door of the station.”

Media watcher Afghan Journalist Safety Committee (AJSC) intervened on behalf of the station. Officially, there is no ban on playing music on radio stations but the Taliban extremists make up rules as they see fit. A staff member speaking anonymously to the (UK) Independent (April 7) said there was a meeting with the Taliban extremists on Wednesday. “Right now, I am not scared, and I will fight for my radio station’s existence. Even if the Taliban wants to jail or kill me in their prison custody.”

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
