News Channels Win The Season, Music Channels Race To The Bottom
Yippie!! The last weeks of winter can be good for radio broadcasters. Returning to work after year end holidays it is a time to regroup, rethink, rebuild. Sometimes listeners pay attention to all this. The advertising people pay no attention until that first survey of the new year is released.

Morning radio audience sharply rises with total listening flat
back to work

Of interest to media watchers are audience trends. Radio broadcasters, and the media buyers they serve, are particularly tuned to published data showing winners and, well, the rest. Research providers are always under pressure to deliver more data faster. Whether this affects program output is arguable.

The latest radio audience estimates from the Spanish General Media Study (EGM) for the January-March period was released this week (April 19). Overall, radio listening is Spain has barely changed year on year. Media watchers are looking for evidence that listener behavior through the coronavirus pandemic is either reverting to prior levels or forever changed. The current EGM report barely satisfies that itch. (See more about media in Spain here)

To the relief of many the principle four national radio channels added listeners since the same period in 2021. And the general rankings remained unchanged. Cadena SER is on top, again, with a huge increase. Cadena COPE, perennial number two, also had a big increase. Onda Cero and public channel RNE, respectively, also gained though more modestly. Audience share data points are no longer publicly available; hence, the data table no longer updated.

As usual, considerable attention from Spanish media watchers was on major channels’ morning shows and their stars. Sharing a few data points, media portal DirComfidential (April 19) noted that the top four, from the aforementioned national channels, all gained audience year on year. Leading is the Cadena Ser morning show Hoy por Hoy principally hosted by Angels Barceló, “surpassing 3 million listeners.” She’s a big fan of the Barcelona football club. In second place by a tiny bit is Cadena Cope host Carlos Herrera, He has been a fixture of Spanish radio for nearly fifty years. Carlos Alsina, morning host for Onda Cero, placed third with the best showing since Carlos Herrera exited. The Las Mañanas morning show on RNE, hosted by Inigo Alfonso, also gained, placing fourth.

Big broadcasters remain wary of digital radio, others take what they can
regulator rethinks plan

National media regulators in Europe generally fall into two camps on digital radio DAB+ development. Many are enthusiastic supporters, even promoters. Some are rather ambivalent; take it or leave it. Broadcasters are about the same.

Polish media regulator KRRiT recently opened new DAB+ tenders for two sets of broadcasters. One was offered to big national private-sector operators RMF Group and Radio Zet/Agora Group along with religious broadcaster Radio Maryja. The other was for regional operators and newcomers.

Executives with RMF Group and Radio Zet/Agora Group have never been excited about DAB+. Radio Maryja is always looking for expended distribution. RMF Group president Kazimierz Gródek participated in the competition warily. “If it turns out the costs are too high, we will reconsider,” he said, quoted by Wirtualnemedia (April 19). There was no change in the position of Agora Group. (See more about media in Poland here)

In the second group, most were bidding on local multiplex positions. One was from an operator that lost a license in 2015 for re-broadcasting Russian propaganda channel Sputnik. ZPR Media, which operates several notable radio brands - Radio Eska, Vox FM and Radio Supernova - filed for just one new multiplex position. (See more about digital radio here)

The KRRiT noted all this. “Due to the fact that the number of submitted applications is equal to the number of granted or amended (extended) licenses indicated in the announcement, the procedures will be conducted separately for each application,” said its statement. In other words, since fewer than expected applications were received, there will be a new plan. It now seems those DAB+ multiplex spots left vacant will be assigned to Polish state radio. All Polskie Radio channels are currently available on DAB+ multiplexes.

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
