The Buzz In That Message Is A Wonderful Thing
radio repellent Always seeking the zeitgeist, advertising people have thoroughly embraced technology. With that understood, does traditional media have a chance? Apparently so, whether you can hear it or not.

DJs suspended for very bad joke
“beyond the limits”

Eska Rock morning DJs Michal Figurski and Kuba Wojewodzki violated rules on discrimination, said Poland’s media regulator KRRiT, by making disparaging comments about Ukrainians on-the-air after the UEFA Euro 2012 Ukraine-England football match.

“It was a joke that no one understood,” explained station program director Boguslaw Potoniec, quoted by Gazeta Wyborcza (June 26). The duo has been absent from the airwaves this week, suspended according to Mr. Potoniec, who apologized. (See more on media in Poland here)

The “joke” became a diplomatic incident, as Poland and Ukraine co-host the Euro 2012 football championships, drawing an official complaint from Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland.

The Eska Rock morning team attracted significant KRRiT fines earlier this year for “insulting” a civil servant of foreign heritage. In that ruling the regulator noted a “demonstration of xenophobia and racism…which goes beyond the limits of satire and ethical journalism.”

The KRRiT will hear the arguments of all parties before determining a penalty. Under Polish law the DJs could also face three years in jail. (JMH)

Format licensing a growing revenue stream
Dancing as fast as I can

The dance music format of RTL’s Fun Radio is coming to Spain. Through a license agreement with Movemos Madrid, which operates 35 local FM stations across much of Spain under the Loca FM brand, the switch should take place on or about September 1st. Loca FM is also a dance music format on FM but also produces several thematic internet channels.

Fun Radio in Spain will be “a Spanish radio station for the Spanish, with the same format…the same brand and the same star artists” heard on the French national channel, said Fun Radio and RTL2 general director Jérôme Fouqueray to Le.buzz.media (June 22). The plan is “to be in the top five” in Spain or, at least, beat Spanish dance channel Maxima FM “within the next three years.” In the recent AIMC EGM national radio audience survey Maxima FM posted 3.7% market share, ranking 11th among all national channels. (See more on media in Spain here)

The other part of the plan is to boost “revenue other than advertising to five to the percent of sales in the next five years,” he added. RTL Group owns and operates radio channels under the Fun Radio brand in France, Belgium and Slovakia. The company owns 21% of leading Spanish general interest radio channel Onda Cero and music channel Europa FM. (See more on RTL Group here)

The Fun Radio brand name appears is many countries, sometimes licensed by RTL Group and sometimes not, from Martinique and Romania to Reunion and Sweden. Radio format licensing is a growing business segment for some broadcasters. NRJ Group has drifted away from ownership outside of France in favor of licensing the NRJ brand. (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
