Audience surveys always hold that certain truth. As the story unfolds we learn something about what people want and will tune-in for. Very little is predictable these days and that makes for very interesting reading. Of course, there are tears.
International broadcasting 3.0 includes no broadcasting
Winding down, redundancy, closure
The reorganization plan for Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) fully underway, the Supervisory Board named Robert Zaal director, replacing Jan Hoek effective November 1st. Last year the Dutch government slashed the RNW budget by 70% from 2013 with a new mandate focusing on free speech in Africa and Asia. Mr. Zaal had been director of RTV North Holland and previously director of broadcasting organization ROOS.
“This is more than just a regular job for me,” said Mr. Zaal in a statement (July 27). “It will be a challenge, together with the new editor-in-chief, to steer RNW in this new phase. There’s a good plan for RNW 3.0 and we will implement it in a serious and business-like fashion.” (See RNW statement here)
From the first of 2013 RNW will end broadcasting activities and devote energies to the web delivered services. About 270 employees are on the redundancy plan, including managing director Hoek, who “remains responsible for activities related to the winding down of the old organization, including the social (redundancy) plan and the closure of the relay stations.” (See more on international broadcasting here)
Ending Dutch-language services is a substantial part of the RNW downsizing. Four RNW employees made redundant, led by editor Thomas Arts, have launched Dutchabroad.nl to fill the void. “Within a short time we were inundated with reactions from people saying how important our digital products were to them,” he said, quoted by SabaNews.nl (July 27), ”and how upset they’d be if we disappeared.” (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
