Automakers monetize the dashboard, subscriptions for radio
"I figured things out"

Every radio broadcaster in the world, with scant exception, is mounting serious efforts to attract Gen Z listeners, also known as Zoomers. Actually, every business selling anything is laser focused on Zoomers, just as they aimed their ad agencies on Baby Boomers two generations ago. Being fully attached to their mobile phones, Zoomers are a tough catch for traditional broadcasters.

The recently concluded 2023 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, always in Las Vegas, devoted, as always, considerable space to technology. On display were all the latest gizmos created, first, to streamline broadcaster’s access to the all-important ad bots and, second, to mitigate every possible cost, such as employees. Never has so much AI been seen in one hall.

Many broadcasters - in the US, Canada, Australia and elsewhere - own or operate AM/MW radio transmitters. Some have given them up as they are expensive with no Zoomers attached. In his opening remarks to those in attendance NAB president Curtin LeGeyt gave a special shout-out to AM radio broadcasters and the special dilemmas they face. (See more about digital transitions here)

As automakers have become quite protective of their dashboard space, some have challenged the timeless notion that they can’t sell a car without a radio in it. The first was electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla booting AM receivers from the dashboard in 2018. For a subscription fee, of course, drivers could retain their AM radio. More recently, Ford Motor Company announced its Mustang brand would be AM-free in 2024. Eight other carmakers have done the same, all claiming - correctly, it seems - that AM radio receivers cause disruptive interference with EV systems. Take it from Tesla owner and Chief Twit Elon Musk, there’s a subscription to solve this.

Broadcasters took note of this trend and immediately appealed to responsible authorities to protect emergency alert systems that operate on the AM/MW band through existing stations. Unlike FM signals and various digital services, AM signals easily pass through bridges, tunnels and buildings and travel great distances. “AM radio is irreplaceable,” said US Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), quoted by The Verge (March 10).

Another constituency important to the NAB - and certainly politicians of a certain bent - are AM radio talk show hosts. There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands, filling the airwaves. They have their own magazine - Talkers. “I figured things out,” said prominent right-wing talkshow host Mark Levin, quoted by Mediaite (April 10). “That’s aimed at people like me to prevent people like you from just turning on your radio. That’s what that’s all about.” There’s always another conspiracy theory.

Another public radio broadcaster flips the bird
"extremely worrying"

Several weeks ago Chief Twit Elon Musk decided to mislabel the posts by public broadcasters to align with his peculiar worldview. He went after US public radio network NPR as “state-supported.” Then UK public broadcaster BBC, Australian public broadcasters ABC and SBS and Canadian public broadcasters Radio Canada and CBC were similarly maligned. Minnesota Public Radio and US public TV network PSB followed.

As is typical for public broadcasters they set out to educate Chief Twit or, at least, have the labels changed. Public broadcasters, naturally, were appalled by these confusing labels more appropriate for Russia Today. We know these edicts came directly from Chief Twit because he is the only remaining employee. As much as the brand managers tried these were fraught. As a result, they began “downgrading” the use of the social media platform they once dearly loved even as Chief Twit began changing those labels to the more appropriate “publicly funded.” (See more about social media here)

Last week there was yet another. Swedish pubic radio broadcaster Sveriges Radio (SR) “ceased to be active” on Twitter, reported Journalisten SE (April 18). Saying the label issue remains “extremely worrying,” said a spokesperson, SR and news channel Ekot just don’t find it useful as only 7% of Swedes use the platform. The broadcaster is mindfully concerned about staff reductions at Twitter that may affect “the company's capacity to deal with fake accounts, misinformation, hate and threats.” (See more about media in Sweden here)

YLE, the public broadcaster in Finland, the world’s happiest country, has no current plan to drop the Twitter platform, said strategy director Marit af Björkesten, quoted by Helsingin Sanomat (April 18), who added that the platform has become more unpredictable. “We have been following Twitter critically for a long time.”

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
