Hot Topic - Television News
A path forward is increasingly dreary for news outlets. This is not simply a seasonal effect. After three years - or so - of multiple, often intersecting newsworthy events those reporting, broadly, are catching up with the listeners, viewers and readers. This means, as several analysts and executives have noted, stepping back. It’s a cycle.
Forever and a day television has been the brightest spot for broadcasters and advertisers. News and public affairs played a large part in TV channel branding. Coincident with coronavirus lockdowns TV - news channels in particular - became bright spots, equally, in households. More TV news channels popped up. Now they are popping away.
There was a time when streaming video services were king of the media mountain. Not only were viewers signing up in droves, quite often to more than one service, but the “streamers” - as they are known - took command of the production capitals. After all, cranking out new and different films and series had a certain appeal for viewers looking for more, not to forget bigger. There have been blockbusters. All of this attracted investors, always looking for earth shaking returns. The coronavirus pandemic hit and the streaming video business just got mammoth. Then it all got real.
Business school academics study everything they can in search of trends, outcomes and fruitful practices. Every few years all of this is thrown out. Some are happy, some confused, many write books. Remember the long-tail theory? Neither does anyone else. Cycles are popular fodder, mostly because huge datasets are easier to crunch. And everybody looks for an outlier, kind of like aliens.
When under certain stress public servants in this post-modern age turn to television. Reliably reaching great numbers of people television is quite important. Being on TV is one factor. Controlling what TV shows to that big audience is another, arguably more important. Among certain observers, this is called state capture, very sinister. Unfortunately for those seeking such control, the audience controls the volume.
The Happy Advertising People - OUR Happy Advertising People - have been down in the dumps for a couple of years. Their clients - mercuriously referred to as brands - were mostly hiding out, holding out or engaging in behaviors inappropriate for public discussion. Finally, relief came, news cycles being shortened by TikTok. Ad-land is again at the forefront of popular culture.
The Great Resignation has received considerable attention in recent months. It seems people are quitting their jobs or retiring early, bring some alarm. The media world has been afflicted, with some surprise, as those seem to be good jobs. For a variety of reasons, TV news anchors, some rather high profile, are bowing out, changing jobs, deserting the audiences.
