Cambridge University in your pocket with iTunes U - October 7, 2008
from Genevieve Maul/Cambridge University

University of Cambridge lectures, short films and interviews can now be downloaded to a computer near you, simply by launching iTunes.

Now available on iTunes U, an area of the iTunes Store offering free education content, Cambridge University will provide users from across the globe free access to material from some of the University’s top academics, 24 hours a day.

Podcasts from Dr David Starkey’s (of Channel 4’s Monarchy fame) history of Cambridge, interviews with some of Cambridge’s Nobel prize winners and an exploration of Cambridge’s code-breaking exploits during the World War II are just a few examples of more than 300 podcasts available.

Cambridge on iTunes U will also include Dr Chris Smith under the guise of ‘The Naked Scientists’. Dr Smith and his team of physicians and researchers strip science down to the basics. Their popular podcast currently tops the science charts for downloads in the US, as well as hovering in the top 20 science downloads in the iTunes Store for most of the rest of the world.

John Naughton, Observer columnist and Fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, commented on the launch: "The old adage that 'Cambridge ideas change the world' has just received a new twist: now they're on your desktop."

Cambridge on iTunes U will offer something for everyone whether you are an entrepreneur, historian or art-lover. The more than 300 audio and video tracks currently on offer cover a broad range of themes; delve into the Enron scandal, take a guided tour of the exhibitions at the Fitzwilliam museum by leading experts, and listen to the regular contributions from the St John’s College choir – all without having to leave your house!

Additionally, students hoping to apply to Cambridge will be able to download videos to guide them through the application process.

All of the content will be playable on a Mac or PC with iTunes and can be synched to an iPod or iPhone.

Recorded material has been posted online in the past from Cambridge, but this is the first time it will all be offered in one place. Organised in iTunes U, it will create an opportunity to search through the entire catalogue and provide an insight into life at Cambridge.

Panasonic Runs Global Eco Relay Campaign - October 6, 2008
from Marguerite Clark/Panasonic

342 Panasonic Offices and Factories Worldwide Step Up Environmental Activities From 4–16 October

Panasonic Corporation is conducting a group-wide ecology campaign called "Panasonic Eco Relay" from 4-16 October 2008, during which the company's employees around the world are carrying out various environmental activities. The campaign is an implementation of an idea that won the Eco Ideas Contest held last year among Panasonic employees. The Eco Relay event aims at fostering a global corporate environment in which each employee voluntarily thinks about how he or she leads the way with eco ideas and puts these ideas into practice, bolstering the unity of all global employees in order to contribute to harmonious coexistence with the global environment through collective wisdom.

During the designated key activity period, 342 offices and factories in 39 countries and regions are engaging in various eco-related activities such as environmental education, cleanups, and tree planting. At the same time, as a corporate citizen, Panasonic is expanding environmental initiatives involving employees' families, local residents, and children. A total of some 520 activities are planned for this year's Panasonic Eco Relay event. Overall, the company aims at reducing CO2 emissions by 500 tons, mainly through tree planting activities.

Panasonic has been actively involved in environmental conservation activities since October 2007, when the company announced its Eco Ideas Declaration consisting of three concepts: "Eco Ideas for Products", "Eco Ideas for Manufacturing", and "Eco Ideas for Everybody, Everywhere". The Panasonic Eco Relay campaign is one of the "Eco Ideas for Everybody, Everywhere". The company has been driving the "Love the Earth Citizens' Campaign (LE Activities)" in Japan. It involves its employees and their families, who have been engaged proactively in environmental activities at home and in their local communities. Through this Eco Relay event, Panasonic also aims at expanding the LE Activities globally, thereby establishing and putting into practice environmental activities tailored to local conditions.

ABI Research - MySpace and Facebook Fast Becoming the Leading Mobile Social Networks - October 6, 2008
from Nicole Fabris/ABI Research

According to a recent online survey* conducted by ABI Research, nearly half (46%) of those who use social networks have also visited a social network through a mobile phone. Of these, nearly 70% have visited MySpace and another 67% had visited Facebook. No other social networking site reached 15% adoption mobile adoption.

“As in the online social networking space, there is clearly a large gap between the big two (MySpace and Facebook) social networks and the others,” says research director Michael Wolf.  “ABI Research believes this is because consumers do not want to recreate entirely new and separate social networks for mobile, but rather want to tap into their existing social network and have it go with them via the mobile phone. For most, this means MySpace, Facebook, or even both.”

So what are these consumers doing when they access their mobile social network? The biggest features consumers use when accessing a social network on their phone is checking for comments and messages from their friends, with both of these features registering above 50% for mobile social network users. Posting status updates also has proven popular, with over 45% of mobile social users letting others what they are up to via their phone.

“The social network is increasingly becoming a central hub for communication across online and mobile domains for many consumers,” said Wolf. “To a degree, it allows them to centralize messaging, communication and even digital media consumption through a centralized property on various screens. We believe this centralization of a consumer’s digital lifestyle through social networks will only increase adoption of mobile social networking in coming years.”

Arbitron Inc. Seeks Declaratory Judgment and Injunctive Relief against the Attorney General for the State of New York - October 6, 2008
from Thom Mocarsky/ARBITRON

Company files suit in Federal Court to prevent a restraint of publication of Portable People Meter listening estimates;
Maintains that restraint of PPM would have an adverse impact on the radio industry and violates Company’s First Amendment rights.

Arbitron Inc. announced today that it has asked the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, for a declaratory judgment and injunctive relief against the Attorney General for the State of New York to prevent any attempt to restrain Arbitron’s publication of its Portable People MeterTM listening estimates.

The Company stated that any restraint on the publication of its PPMTM listening estimates would have an adverse impact on the radio broadcast industry and advertising industries as a whole, would cause Arbitron’s business to suffer severe irreparable harm, would cause economic injury to Arbitron’s shareholders and violates the Company’s First Amendment rights to publish its radio audience listening estimates.

Among other things, the Company is seeking the following relief:

• a judgment declaring that the publication of its PPM listening estimates is fully protected by the U.S. and New York Constitutions; and
• a preliminary and permanent injunction along with a temporary restraining order enjoining the New York Attorney General from attempting to restrain or prevent Arbitron from publishing its PPM listening estimates.

“Arbitron publicly announced in November 2007 that we intended to commercialize our Portable People Meter radio ratings service in New York with the release of the September 2008 PPM survey report on October 8, 2008. The New York Attorney General has waited until October 2, less than a week before our scheduled commercialization, to notify Arbitron that his office intends to bring a lawsuit seeking to enjoin alleged violations of New York law. Such conduct is unfair to Arbitron and is unfair to the radio and advertising industries. We are asking the United States District Court to uphold our First Amendment rights and to prevent the New York Attorney General from attempting to restrain publication of our Portable People Meter listening estimates,” said Steve Morris, president, chairman and chief executive officer, Arbitron Inc.
