VPRT begrüßt NRW-Entscheidung zur Begrenzung der WDR-Radiowerbung: Richtungsweisender Beschluss auch für weitere Bundesländer - January 27, 2016
from Harmut Schultz for VPRT

RCS MediaGroup - Corriere della Sera to launch new digital offering - January 25, 2016
from Beatrice Minzioni/RCS MediaGroup

Corriere della Sera celebrates its 140th anniversary this year and is ready for a new challenge: to boost the value of its online journalism – available on desktop, tablet and smartphone – by adopting a model in Italy that has been tried and tested by leading newspapers around the world.

The new concept of the newspaper revolves around the needs of its readership, with their different choices of reading platform, schedules, movements and habits, offering round-the-clock access to top quality information.

Editor-in-chief Luciano Fontana explains: “With the new digital offering, Corriere della Sera has embraced a new vision of information, setting itself the goal of offering unique, original and distinctive content on all platforms. This is the start of a new approach that will soon be extended to other services, on the basis of ongoing engagement with our readers.” However, Fontana has stressed that the focus on paper editions will not diminish. “We continue to believe strongly in developing new initiatives for the traditional newspaper. The success of laLettura shows how the right paper products can still attract reader enthusiasm.”

The new Corriere della Sera has been given a thorough overhaul, with the entire editorial team engaged in the non-stop production of quality content for the web and paper editions. Staff will be working from 5:30 in the morning to 1:30 at night, over several shifts, to ensure full coverage of the news.

“The newspaper and its publisher are engaged in a wide-ranging organizational and conceptual initiative to further enhance Corriere della Sera’s up-to-the-minute presence and its high quality news and cultural output across all digital platforms,” says Alessandro Bompieri, head of the RCS Media Division. “The entire fabric of the newspaper has been affected by the process, with everyone involved sharing a great sense of responsibility. The reason for this is clear: it is a significant step forward in our relationship with our readers, whereby we offer value at every click and in exchange ask for this to be recognized. After the trial period, the basic subscription comes at a negligible cost for readers – 33 cents per day – but has a symbolic value of great importance. It marks a move to a new, forward-looking arrangement between the publisher, the newspaper and the readership.”

The new formula will launch on 27 January. From that day, readers will have free access to 20 articles per month on www.corriere.it via PC, tablet and smartphone. Only after that limit has been reached, readers will be asked to purchase a subscription. The basic subscription of €9.99 per month – but just €0.99 for the first month – will give readers access to all site content from desktops and mobiles, as well as the newspaper’s historical archive, which dates back to 1876.

Readers who choose not to purchase a subscription will continue to have free and unlimited access to the main home page, section home pages, videos and breaking news linked to the home page.

New desktop website

The new Corriere della Sera home page will launch on 26 January, featuring even stronger interaction between the online and paper editions. Redesigned to be clearer and more linear, the website’s new home page features key news items, with editorials and commentary at the top right of the page. Scrolling through, visitors will find the various sections, all constantly updated, with investigative reports and focus pieces clearly visible on the left, while the right-hand column shows Corriere’s channels, supplements and blogs.

Mobile offering

Corriere’s new digital product range is designed specifically for mobile platforms, fast becoming the most popular way to access web content in general and news in particular, especially via smartphone. Besides featuring direct access to content, the updated mobile site features a new design showpiecing top quality content (focus pieces and analyses), with special care taken over the layout and graphic detail.

As of 27 January, all readers will have free access to 20 articles, whereas the current website requires payment for access.

Digital archive

One of the key highlights of the new digital offering is the historical archive, which dates back to 1876 and will be available to all subscribers from 27 January.

Built around a user-friendly search page with an engaging interface, articles can be cross-searched by date, author and topic, enabling direct access to every article published by Corriere della Sera over its 140-year history, with almost eight million news stories, investigative reports, op-eds and comment pieces.

The archive offers unlimited access to Corriere’s immense heritage and roster of leading writers, with pieces by the likes of Luigi Barzini, Dino Buzzati, Italo Calvino, Eugenio Montale, Luigi Einaudi, Ada Negri, Grazia Deledda, Luigi Pirandello, Alberto Moravia, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Indro Montanelli, Enzo Biagi, Oriana Fallaci, Claudio Magris, Ernesto Galli della Loggia, Paolo Mieli, Beppe Severgnini, Dacia Maraini, and Maria Grazia Cutuli.

The new PrimaOra news service

Subscribers will receive the new PrimaOra newsletter first thing in the morning. Prepared by Corriere della Sera contributors, the newsletter gives a compelling take on the day’s news at a glance.
