It’s Always Something Else, Right?
Look Out! Markets can be cruel. Consolidation can be necessary. For the media sector there is no perfect formula. Dynamics, market and otherwise, often point in different directions and change quickly. It’s like riding a shark.

Final negotiations fail on radio channel deal…sort of
Breaking up is hard to do

French media house Lagardère will not, they say, part with struggling national radio channel Virgin Radio, or a part thereof. After months of speculation followed by weeks of negotiations with web radio company Goom Radio and its financial partner Firmalac it seemed that Lagardère would off-load 50% of Virgin Radio to Goom Radio, keeping ad sales but relinquishing management and programming to Goom Radio principal Roberto Ciurleo. It looked like a done deal.

Surprise! Lagedère will “continue and strengthen its strategic partnership with Goom (Radio) in the digital domain,” said radio director Richard Lenormand in a statement (October 9), but the channel will not now be sold, whole or part. At the same time, M. Ciurleo, once programming chief at NRJ, will become Virgin Radio’s managing director. Negotiations seem to have broken down over a right of first refusal if Goom Radio wanted to sell its stake. (See more on media in France here)

Goom Radio launched in 2008 with venture financing, aggressive expansion following quickly. The company’s exact financial situation is closely held but French media watchers note expansion into the US market was put on hold. A deal with Lagardère would have provided a cash injection. And it still might. Lagardère is very interested in “the digital domain” and Goom Radio remains “a strategic partner.”

Radio station nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
“acoustics”

Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow) and its chief editor Alexei Venediktov are leading contenders for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, said the Peace Research Institute Oslo (Oslo), which annually ranks nominee chances, reported Bloomberg (October 2). If the news/talk radio station is selected by the Nobel Committee it would be the first media outlet winning the Peace Prize. Ekho Moskvy, owned by Gazprom Media, has long challenged the Russian establishment and criticized President Vladimir Putin.

PRIO Director Kristian Berg Harpviken handicapped five likely winners, placing non-violence theorist Gene Sharp first, Russian human rights organization Memorial second, Ekho Moskvy third, Nigerian Archbishop John Onaiyekan and Sultan of Sokoto Mohamed Sa'ad Abubakar and Burma’s President Thein Sein fifth.

“Under continuous government pressure, yet able to operate relatively freely, there has been some criticism that the channel is overly submissive,” noted the PRIO website. “A prize to honor independent reporting in Russia could combine Ekho Moskvy with others, such as Novaya Gazeta newspaper, the Caucasian knot web-portal (a source of independent information on the Caucasus), or  Yassen Nikolayevich Zassoursky, widely seen as the godfather of critical journalism, and founder of the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University. “ The Norwegian Noble Committee will announce the 2012 Peace Prize winner October 12. (See more about media in Russia here)

Mr. Venediktov called the nomination “pleasant, although it is undeserved,” interviewed by the BBC Russian Service (October 5). “Media should get a professional award,” he added, maybe for physics because radio is about “acoustics.”  (JMH)

The Six Radio Brands is about the uniquely European development of radio brands. Competition among broadcasters - and certainly between the public and commercial sectors - gives radio in Europe a rich dynamic. As consumers become more media-literate and demand more attachment broadcasters find target markets illusive.
Regulators, advertisers and broadcasters take turns trying to influence radio brands. Culture and technology makes an impact. More and more, the greatest influence comes from consumers.
The Six Radio Brands describes advantages and pit-falls of brand strategies, with illustrations from current radio practice.
