Even more want digital radio licenses
Many new voices
French media regulator CSA has published (October 2) the list of applicants for regional digital radio licenses in Paris, Nice and Marseille. For each there were more than 40 applicants, many from standing FM licensees. Community broadcasters (Class A) were particularly well represented. And there are many prospective new broadcasters.
Absent, conspicuously, were the big national radio operators, except for Skyrock. The others decided to pass on digital radio…so far. (See more on media in France here)
The CSA will now sift through the applications and likely make decisions known early in 2013. (JMH)

FM switch-off looms
Seven applicants have come forward for national and regional commercial digital radio (DAB) licenses, reported the Swedish Broadcasting Authority on its website (October 1). Major commercial radio operators in Sweden – MTG, SBS/ProSiebenSat and NRJ – have asked for concessions along with four individual companies. MTG Radio has asked for 11 concessions to operate on the national multiplexes.
Concession awards are largely based on an applicants programming proposal. Applicants need to make a separate, corresponding arrangement with the multiplex provider. A decision on the awards will be made later this autumn with service commencing after January 1st, 2013. (See more on digital radio here) Swedish public radio SR offers several digital radio channels. Next year the Swedish Culture Ministry is set to make a decision on FM switch-off for the public broadcaster.
Also after the first of the year the DRM+ digital radio standard will be offered as a test in Stockholm by the Stockholm Community Radio Association and the Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE). (JMH)
