Everything on television passes through phases. Some genres disappear only to reemerge as something else. When TV channels were exploding, every variation could find a place. Streaming services only drove to hysteria the need to attract viewers. But, still, tastes do change.
The media trend of the decade is right now. People want that drama at the moment they want it and they want to be in it. Delivering that means lots of bandwidth, literally and figuratively. For some media watchers live television is over. For others it isn’t just the future it’s the only future.
Contracts between reality TV show participants and production companies are employment contracts, ruled a French court (June 3), affirming several lower court rulings.
Reality TV – and certainly the talent contest variety – are proven popular programs with audiences worldwide. Broadcasters, originally attracted by comparatively low cost, push producers for bigger stunts. The genre has matured, something producers fight. Even in fair fights somebody gets bruised.
The Path to 9/11 docudrama produced for US network ABC panders to the political. It's what we call propaganda.
Touting hits like “Strictly Come Dancing” and “Honey, We’re Killing the Kids,” BBC Entertainment chief Wayne Garvie praises reality TV to public service broadcasters.
“Big Brother” opens its new season in the Netherlands promising, at least in the season promotion, a live birth. One of the contestants is in the final trimester of pregnancy and would, if not earlier voted off the show, give birth right there on TV from the Big Brother house. Not exactly stunning television. Births have been televised live before, though usually in public TV documentaries.
Endemol churns out reality TV shows like Nestlé churns out chocolate bars. Mediaset’s chairman is “very interested”
