Evacuation Convoy Hit By Artillery, Reporter Inside Killed, Another War CrimeJournalist casualties always made headlines, whether specifically targeted with a bomb, gunshot or blade. In conflict zones, media workers are targeted by snipers honing in on those press flack jackets. Some also lose their lives with others, doing their jobs, taking notes and photos in crowded places, vehicles indiscriminately targeted by aggressors. These are war crimes.French video reporter Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was killed yesterday in Ukraine, noted his employer BFM TV (May 30). He was in an armored evacuation vehicle near Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine. It was struck by a Russian artillery round, which exploded. Shrapnel punctured his neck. He was 32 years old and had worked for BFM TV for six years. Colleague Maxime Brandstaetter sustained slight injuries and fixer Oksana Leuta was unhurt. The number of reporters killed during the Russian Federation invasion of Ukraine today numbers eight, said journalism advocate Reporters sans Frontieres (RSF), though other sources claim considerably more. “The bus was targeted, not the journalist directly,” said French Ambassador to Ukraine Étienne de Poncins to FranceInfo (May 31).) What is clear is that during evacuation convoys, there are almost systematic incidents. In Marioupol, one out of two convoys have been targeted.” The evacuation vans were marked “humanitarian convoy,” said RSF general secretary Christophe Deloire to public radio channel France Inter (May 31). "This shell was clearly aimed at this convoy. Fortunately there are journalists on the ground to record that the Russians are targeting civilians and journalists. If we did not send journalists there, we would give way to Russian propaganda, disinformation.” "Today, in the Luhansk region, occupants disrupted the evacuation of combat zones, shooting at a car that was going to look for civilians,” remarked Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky. “French journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was fatally injured by fire. A little over a month ago I gave an interview to this television channel. This was my first major interview with a French media." The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded “a transparent investigation be undertaken as soon as possible to shed full light on the circumstances of this tragedy.” The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened a war crimes investigation into M. Leclerc-Imhoff’s death. RSF has lodged 50 such complaints about Russian Federation actions to the International Criminal Court (ICC). French measurement institute Médiamétrie released its TV scorecard for May viewing this week (May 30). For the TV news channels aggregate viewing rose, year on year. BFMTV placed sixth overall with 3.4% audience share, up from 2.6%. CNews ranked 12th, 2.0% audience share, down from 2.2%. Further down the list, LCI posted a 1.7% audience share, up from 1.1%. Public channel FranceInfo claimed 0.9% audience share, up from 0.7%. French media watchers were quick to observe big gains for BFMTV and LCI, modest for FranceInfo and a loss for the notorious right-wing populist CNews. There are four all-news television channels in France. Most have been on the air for several years. One is rather new. This is similar to other countries. The all-news, news-talk or rolling news formats have gained traction due to attention grabbing news of the day. BFMTV was launched by NextRadioTV in late 2014 as the first all-news TV channel in France. Initially the focus was on business and finance. NextRadioTV was absorbed by Altice Media, subsidiary of the telecom. See also... |
