PRIX EUROPA Award Winners 2010 - October 23, 2010
from Birgit Oehmcke/Prix Europa

The juries have cast their votes: The best European television programmes and online projects for the year 2010 come from Great Britain, Sweden and Germany.

The prize for the best TV miniseries is awarded to the British production Five Daughters written by Stephen Butchard and produced by the BBC. The mini-series tells the true story of five drug-addicted prostitutes who were murdered within a few short weeks in 2006. The best television documentary production from the continent comes from Sweden. Regretters deals with the subject of sex change. The German entry Ceasefire written and directed by Lancelot von Naso wins in the television fiction category. The feature film debut by the Berlin director is about a medicine transport convoy in Iraq during a 24-hour ceasefire.

The French are the recipients of 6,000 Euros and a PRIX EUROPA trophy for best European radio documentary for Who Killed Lolita?. A big surprise: The award for best radio play goes to the Estonian contribution Silence and Cries. Great Britain can congratulate itself on the prize for best European online project after the jury decided upon BBC Lab UK. Six other PRIX EUROPA awards went to Ireland, Finland, France, Sweden and the Netherlands respectively, among them the Newcomers Award "Languages through Lenses" for the best short video on multilingualism in Europe.

Awards Gala in Berlin

The prize-giving ceremony took place on Saturday evening in the RBB Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin. Finland's best-known TV anchorman Jussi-Pekka Rantanen hosted the two-hour gala. Barbara Kisseler, the head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, was among those making the awards. She presented the award for best TV film to the German director Lancelot von Naso. The 12 prize-winners held their own against tough competition at the end of the festival. This time 220 productions from 31 countries were nominated for awards. The PRIX EUROPA is the most important European festival for television, radio and emerging media. The competition is held every October in Berlin.

Political issues in the spotlight

Topical, exciting and sometimes even surprising productions once again provided an overview of the current productions from media professionals throughout Europe: "There was a large number of highly political issues especially in the classical TV documentaries. These ranged from environmental scandals and dispossession right up to the Romanian version of capitalism. This trend is also discernible on the radio," says Festival Director Susanne Hoffmann. A further central theme of the festival was the subject of television co-productions. Faced with shrinking budgets, the question of cross-border cooperation seems to be gaining in importance for the industry. The topic of television miniseries was also discussed: "In the past, we had the classical series alongside individual pieces, which were invested in once or twice a year. This year we have observed a trend towards more demanding miniseries, which consist of up to 10 episodes and are able to keep their viewers hooked for longer periods of time."

No need for a red carpet

The real stars of the PRIX EUROPA are the programmes and their makers. That the mood this year was once again so enthusiastic even without the flurry of flashbulbs, is largely down to the festival's participants. Despite the heavy workload, they enjoy the special festival atmosphere as well as the variety of programmes. Here artistic auteur films meet topical features, the low-budget project is on an equal footing with the expensive and elaborate large-scale production.

Full house from the early morning

Media folk are not generally known as early risers. This is not the case at the PRIX EUROPA. The daily competition previews started this year with a première. Under the title "Breakfast with...", high-profile media professionals from all over Europe served up exciting keynote speeches on topical issues for the industry. Over coffee and croissants, the short presentations served as a source of inspiration for the long competition day. To be continued at PRIX EUROPA 2011.

Demand unhalting

Well-filled screenings and happy faces characterised the festival week in Berlin's Masurenallee. With more than 1,000 participants, the positive development from the previous year was repeated. This helped PRIX EUROPA to maintain its position as a major European event for the industry. The festival concept is to be creatively further developed for its upcoming 25th anniversary. Plans are being considered for a continuation and expansion of the accompanying events, such as screenings in the embassies of participating countries.
