AdEx interims: Double digit growth for online advertising in Europe - November 4, 2010
from Geraldine Gitel for IABEurope

IAB Europe today releases half yearly figures from a number of national Interactive Advertising Bureaus, revealing healthy double-digit growth in online ad spend despite the continuing challenging economic environment across the region.

Alain Heureux, President and CEO of IAB Europe, the trade body that represents the online advertising industry across Europe, said: “These half yearly figures suggest that a tipping point has been reached. Every day new companies plan online ad campaigns for the first time, encouraged by reach, return on investment and consumer engagement. Those that are already online are allocating a greater proportion of their ad spend to the medium. And the type of campaigns has evolved – we’re seeing great results for branding and targeted marketing using performance-based techniques. We’re also seeing fantastic results for cross-media campaigns incorporating TV, radio and outdoor. At this rate of growth, Europe’s online ad industry’s market value could overtake the US by the summer next year.”

The growth rates in those IAB markets that report audited online ad spend for the first six months of 2010 were:

Spain - 20%, Poland - 18%, Italy - 15%, Hungary - 11%, UK - 10 %, France - 10%, Bulgaria - 10%, Romania - 8%.

Viva Espana

At 20% Spain enjoyed the highest growth rate, followed by Poland (18%). In Spain display (28%) experienced higher growth than search (14%) for the first time. The boost of the national team’s performance in the World Cup, a growth in the automotive sector, and a maturing market all contributed to more ad spend going to online, with part of it coming from TV.

BBC Burmese reinforces programming and news teams to cover Burma elections - November 1, 2010
from BBC WS PR

As Burma prepares to hold elections that should form part of the country’s transition from military rule to democracy, BBC Burmese has further strengthened its news teams and extended its programming to provide audiences with comprehensive and in-depth coverage.

Between Sunday 7 and Wednesday 10 November, the service will add two hours of original programming, focusing on the elections, to its daily broadcasts. To deliver this special output, BBC Burmese has reinforced the team at its Bangkok bureau with two extra journalists.

BBC journalists are not allowed to enter Burma, but BBC Burmese is using its network of regional correspondents and stringers to inform its Burmese audiences and to help the BBC’s international news services to cover the developments in the country.

Head of BBC Burmese, Tin Htar Swe, says: “It’s hard to overestimate the significance of these elections, which are going to change the political structure of Burma. As people in Burma are urged to go to the polls for the first time in 20 years, we know they will be tuning into BBC Burmese for a chance to hear out and engage with representatives of some of the parties taking part in the elections, as well as with other Burmese from both within and outside Burma.”

Between 7 and 10 November, BBC Burmese will broadcast two half-hour and one 45-minute programme a day, presented from the London and Bangkok studios of the BBC. The radio programming is broadcast on shortwave and on PAS10 and Palapa satellite television channels, and streamed online via the website bbcburmese.com.

Launched in 1940, BBC Burmese has a weekly audience of 8.4 million listeners in Burma, reaching 22.9% of the country’s population. Independent surveys also show that BBC Burmese has established itself as the most trusted international broadcaster in Burma.

The elections in Burma are widely covered by the BBC’s international news services. On Assignment on BBC World Service, and on Newsnight on BBC World News, Sue Lloyd Roberts travels across Burma to investigate why the elections are being held and if ordinary people care about them.
