EASA - Advertising watchdog re-launched in Luxembourg - May 20, 2009
from Renée Brautigam/EASA

The Commission Luxembourgoise pour l’Ethique en Publicité (CLEP) was officially re-launched yesterday as the Luxembourgish advertising self-regulatory organisation, which had been restructured according to the Best Practice Recommendations of the European Advertising Standards Alliance (EASA).

As the CLEP had been inactive for several years, a project was initiated in 2008 to restructure and re-launch the advertising watchdog. This was done with the support of EASA and the Belgian advertising self-regulatory organisation, Jury voor Ethische Praktijken inzake Reclame / Jury d’Ethique Publicitaire (JEP). “We are absolutely thrilled that Luxembourg has re-launched its system according to the best practice approaches put forward by the European Advertising Standards Alliance”, said Piet Jaspaert, President of the JEP and Vice Chair of EASA.

The CLEP’s main priorities will be to make sure that advertising in Luxembourg adheres to the national advertising code, which has been based on the 2006 Consolidated Code of the International Chamber of Commerce. Apart from handling complaints on advertising content submitted by members of the public, the CLEP will also provide copy advice to advertisers, agencies and the media prior to the diffusion of the ads highlighting whether the proposed advertising content is in compliance with the code.

The CLEP is supported by the Conseil de la Publicité du Luxembourg (CPL), which groups advertisers, advertising agencies and media. This council aims to promote, valorise and defend advertising as well as the self-regulation of advertising on the basis of an advertising code.

With the addition of the new advertising self-regulatory organisation in Luxembourg, there are now 23 operational advertising watchdogs in the EU 27, with two in Germany and two in the UK. A further two advertising self-regulatory projects are underway in Bulgaria and Cyprus.

NORWAY WINS THE 54th EUROVISION SONG CONTEST - May 17, 2009
from Michelle Roverelli/EBU

Norway has won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.

Alexander Rybak received 387 points for the song Fairytale written and composed by the artist himself. The winner claimed victory in Moscow in front of a live audience of over 17,000 at the Olimpiyski Indoor Arena. 25 countries participated in the Final.

The show was opened by Cirque de Soleil performing with the winner of the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, Dima Bilan. The interval act featured the amazing Fuerza Bruta dance group.

The Final was transmitted live by 45 television broadcasters over the Eurovision network, and by 5 radio broadcasters over the Euroradio network, to Europe and beyond.

Viewers from the 42 countries who entered the competition were able to vote for their favourite song through a pan-European televoting system. Furthermore, for the first time since 1997, professional juries from each of the participating countries shared responsibility for determining the winner.

The EBU's Executive Supervisor, Svante Stockselius, commended Channel One Russia, “We are very pleased with the production of Channel One Russia. The enormous stage and three creative and wonderfully produced live shows set a new standard not only for the Eurovision Song Contest but for all live TV entertainment shows in the world.”

The winner received the Eurovision Song Contest trophy and the broadcaster of the winning country will have the chance to organise next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
